Therapy is hard. One of the oldest adages in the field is that “things will get worse before they get better”.
But Doc! Things are already miserable.
How much worse can it get?!
I hear you, loud and clear. And I promise, we’re here to help. But that help might look more like learning how to be present with one another as therapist and patient so that you can learn how to be seen and to see yourself.
You might be asking yourself, where do you even begin and how do you prepare for an experience like this? How do you prepare for depth oriented psychotherapy?
Start with your feelings in the moment. What are you feeling? Are you feeling more than one emotion? Can you list them?
Good.
Now where in your body do you experience them? What color are they? What shape are they? How much do they weigh? Can you invite them in to your body?
Was either of these two steps hard? That’s okay. We’ll help you out with both of them. When the time feels right to revisit these skills. In the meantime, maybe you need to start somewhere else. You’ll have the freedom to decide so we can learn who you are and attune to you.
- Maybe you need to start talking about work. Go for it.
- Maybe you need to talk about the latest fight you had with your partner. Go for it.
- Maybe you need to talk about age old conflicts with your family that you can’t seem to move past. Go for it.
- All of this is in service of being. Being present with yourself and with someone to witness your experience and your experience of yourself.
- Maybe a reflection or interpretation is offered and you reflect for a moment and say “no, it’s more like this.” GREAT. Now we’ve both discovered something about your experience.
